G Herbo Drops Gritty, Personal Album: "Humble Beast"

By Andreas Fanos on September 25, 2017

Rapper G Herbo recently released his album “Humble Beast,” which has been getting rave reviews and for good reasons. After releasing a string of mixtapes, he realized that it was finally time to drop an album. The album is gritty, personal, and powerful, and it tells a cohesive story about the young rapper’s life. It foretells his struggle with drugs, family troubles, violence, and the crime manifested in the city of Chicago.

The album starts with a rattling introduction on anthem track “Street.” This gritty and aggressive feel is felt throughout the work and it is what G Herbo is known for. The next song, “Black,” follows behind with nice rhymes behind a rattling beat. “Bi Polar” hits with the same furious nature of street life like the track “Red Snow,” another track that portrays the consequences of gang life.

Rockstar Lil Uzi Vert unites with G Herbo on track “Everything,” where Vert trades nice lyrics alongside Herbo. I did not like the next song, “I Like,” but the song “Man Now” talks about the struggles Herbo has been through with police and trying to survive through stricken poverty. He gives an ode to the friends who stayed with him and helped him out along the way.

Track “Malcolm” gives a rundown of his lost dreams and innocence. We are a product of our environment and where someone comes from can bring about temptations and bad decisions. The song goes into the street life and getting involved in the wrong things, not because of free-will, but because it is inevitable over time.

He was kicked out of his own home and his mother was on drugs, and his father also left him behind. He could have made it in school, but it did not work out that way and he got caught up in the wrong things. It is an embodiment of what a song should do and what other rappers should be trying to emulate as well. This has to be my favorite song on the whole work besides “Mirror” and “Black.”

Once again, the song “Crown” embodies G Herbo’s early ambitions and states his accomplishments. G Herbo unleashes nice lyrics on his cursed life and getting into trouble as a young high school student. Track “Mirror” has one of the best beats on the work and both of the rappers trade nice verses. The track “Trials” depicts that struggle and pain are what life is about and it is what makes people better. Herbo knew he was special and chased it through the struggles and pain.

The track “This n That” is a fun banger with rapper Lil Yachty and Jeremih trading verses. The last song “4 Minutes of Hell, Pt. 5,” is a bonus track where Herbo raps about his bright future. The album instills what it was meant to do in giving fans and others who don’t know him more about his own life and who he is as a person.

G Herbo reflects on his life and gives hope for others to come out victorious. He is a prime example of coming out on top with everything that he has been through.

There is a lot of great music out besides this album too. Music lovers can listen to rapper Kevin Gates’ album “By Any Means 2,” R and B singer Jhene Aiko’s psychedelic work “Trip,” Young Thug and Carnage’s short joint EP, “Young Martha,” and lastly Macklemore’s album “Gemini,” which is filled with plenty of features.
